"Come to a race." Jamie said, looking across the table at Nya.

Nya had escaped the confines of her home for a few hours to grab a cup of coffee and read a manuscript in a local coffee shop, eager for a change of scenery and some quality people watching. Not fifteen minutes after she'd sat down did Jamie walk in, searching for his own caffeine kick.

"I don't want to." Nya said squarely.

"Why?"

"I just don't."

"And again I ask, why?" Jamie prodded gently. "Are you scared I'll get hurt?"

"No." Nya said, while her brain defiantly screamed 'yes, yes, yes'. "I'm afraid I'll be bored watching you go round in circles in ugly, loud cars."

"Huh." Jamie sat back in his chair and taking a sip of his coffee. "You won't be bored."

"I don't want to." Nya said obstinately. 'And I don't want to spend all day watching you in a car that might hurt you when instead I'd like to be making out with you!' Nya tried to shake the thought out of her head, but there it was, as though she were a teenager chasing boys instead of studying for her A levels.

"Okay, so every time I've seen you for the last three weeks, we end up kissing like crazy, then you push me away and tell me to stop, and now you don't even want to see what I do for a living." Jamie sighed. "I'm getting some mixed signals again, Nya."

Nya sighed also. "I don't *always* kiss you like crazy." She said, reddening.

"You're hot for me, and you won't admit it. And you won't come to a race." Jamie continued as though she hadn't spoken. "I don't see a big future for us at this rate."

Nya rolled her eyes. "Why do you...what sort of...shut up!" She said, unable to complete a full and mature thought.

"Is this because of AJ?" Jamie asked after a pregnant pause.

"Why would it be because of AJ?" Nya shot back.

"You are going to get back together with him, aren't you?" Jamie asked, looking away towards the coffee counter to avoid her eyes.

"I'm not." Nya said evenly. "Not even a thought of that has crossed my mind."

"Come to a race." Jamie tried again, carefully avoiding planting any more thoughts of AJ in her mind.

Nya heaved a heavy sigh. "I'll think about it."

"After the race, I promise we can make out." Jamie said with a winning smile.

"Shut up!" Nya repeated again.

"You'll come?"

"I'll think about it."

"Nya..." Jamie began before being cut off.

"I'll think about it."

Nya fought not to slam her front door shut several hours later when a timid looking Casey knocked on her door and handed her tickets and pit passes for the race at Darlington that weekend. He'd explained that Jamie very much wanted her to have them, but was afraid to bring them over himself 'due to her uncontrollable urges'.

Casey had smirked when he said that.

She was going to kill them both once she plotted a way to get away with it.

But as she looked at the heavy tickets in her hand, she knew she would be making no other weekend plans than to watch cars go round and round with the boy she liked inside one of them.
