~Jeffy's POV~
Strictly speaking, that's a lie.
I do like her.
A lot.
I just don't need her knowing that. Especially not after those articles.
Or Martinsville.
"Fire away, Madelyn." I say wearily, though secretly, I gotta say, I've missed all the verbal sparring between us. I mean, we've known each other for years, and it never fails to be spirited, argumentative or downright annoying when we get together, but it is interesting.
"Okay, let's get your sponsor stuff, team stuff out of the way first. How's the Dupont Chevy team going to do this year?" Madelyn says, her fingers poised above the keyboard.
"The Hendrick Motorsports Dupont Chevy Monte Carlo..." I begin out of habit, stopping abruptly at Madelyn's snort. "What?!"
"Sorry." She says, covering her mouth with one hand. 'You couldn't possibly say that any faster, any smoother, any more times than you already do. How many times do you think you say that in one season?"
"You want this interview or not?" I say, throwing her a glare.
"Oh. Threaten me, you big, mean man." She says, grinning but returning to her keyboard.
I swear, she won't leave this place alive at this rate.
"About that not liking you..." I begin, trying to get a rise out of her.
"Shut up, Jeff. You're just intimidated by a woman who's nicer than you, better looking than you and has a college degree."
"I do not! I've never..."
"You have an envy of post-high school degrees. Always have."
"Madelyn..." I say warningly.
"Sorry. Try again." She says, not sounding sorry at all to be baiting me.
"The Hendrick Motorsports Dupont Chevy Monte Carlo team is looking really..."
And again, I can't finish my sentence.
Not because of Maddy's snorting, but on account of a sudden case of darkness.
"Uh. Jeff?"
"Wasn't me!"
"Wasn't me either!"
"Shit."
Welcome to a vacation in Jeff Gordon's world.
